Tatkalika Relationships
The planetary loyalties described in the naisargika (natural) friendship system are fixed across all charts, all times, all people. But Jyotish adds a second layer: tatkalika relationships — temporary, chart-specific friendships and enmities determined by the actual positions of planets in the chart at hand.
The Method§
For any two planets A and B in a given chart, count how many signs separate B's position from A's position. If B falls in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th, or 12th sign from A, then B is a temporary friend of A. If B falls in the 1st (same sign), 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, or 9th sign from A, B is a temporary enemy.
The check is one-directional. You must run it in both directions — A's view of B, then B's view of A — because the results often differ.
| Count from A to B | A's view of B |
|---|---|
| 2nd · 3rd · 4th · 10th · 11th · 12th | ★ temporary friend |
| 1st · 5th · 6th · 7th · 8th · 9th | ✕ temporary enemy |
Note that planets in the same sign as A are counted as temporary enemies — not friends. Proximity in the tatkalika system does not imply warmth. It implies direct competition for the same space.
Why It Matters§
The tatkalika relationship adds nuance that the naisargika system alone cannot supply. Two planets may be natural enemies (say, Jupiter and Mercury) but in a specific chart their positions might place each in the other's temporary friendly houses — making them tatkalika mitra despite the permanent enmity. This softens their interaction considerably.
The reverse is also possible: two natural friends may find themselves in temporarily hostile positions, making what would normally be a supportive combination more fraught in that particular chart.
An Example§
Suppose Mars is in Aries (1st house) and Jupiter is in Cancer (4th house). Counting from Mars's position (Aries) to Jupiter's position (Cancer): Aries=1, Taurus=2, Gemini=3, Cancer=4. Jupiter is in the 4th from Mars — a temporary friend position. Mars views Jupiter as a tatkalika friend.
Now count from Jupiter's position (Cancer) to Mars's position (Aries): Cancer=1, Leo=2, Virgo=3, Libra=4, Scorpio=5, Sagittarius=6, Capricorn=7, Aquarius=8, Pisces=9, Aries=10. Mars is in the 10th from Jupiter — also a temporary friend position. Jupiter views Mars as a tatkalika friend as well.
Both views agree. This pair, which are already natural best friends by the naisargika system, are also temporary friends in this chart — a doubly reinforced alliance.
Asymmetric Relationships§
Asymmetry is common. Planet A may count B as a temporary friend while B counts A as a temporary enemy. This creates a one-sided relationship: A receives B well; B receives A poorly. The compound friendship analysis (panchadha maitri) resolves these into a single five-fold verdict, but the underlying asymmetry still carries interpretive weight.
Tatkalika relationships are not a replacement for naisargika friendships — they are an overlay. Both systems must be applied, and their results must be combined using the panchadha maitri to get the complete picture of how any two planets interact in a specific chart. Check planetary relationships in your own chart.
