Signs Overview

The twelve signs (rashis) are the backdrop against which all planetary positions are read. A planet in Leo expresses differently than the same planet in Scorpio. The house a sign occupies changes the house's character. The sign a planet rules shapes its overall temperament. Signs are the grammar; planets and houses are the words.

Elements — Tattva§

Each sign belongs to one of four elements, cycling sequentially through the zodiac:

Element Signs Quality
Fire · Agni ♈ Aries · ♌ Leo · ♐ Sagittarius Initiative, spirit, inspiration, will
Earth · Prithvi ♉ Taurus · ♍ Virgo · ♑ Capricorn Stability, practicality, accumulation, form
Air · Vayu ♊ Gemini · ♎ Libra · ♒ Aquarius Intellect, communication, relationship, abstraction
Water · Jala ♋ Cancer · ♏ Scorpio · ♓ Pisces Emotion, intuition, depth, dissolution

Fire signs initiate and inspire. Earth signs consolidate and build. Air signs connect and abstract. Water signs feel and dissolve. Planets placed in signs of their own element tend to be comfortable; in signs of the opposing element (fire/water, earth/air), there is often productive tension.

Modalities — Chara, Sthira, Dwisvabhava§

Each sign also belongs to one of three modalities, determining its mode of action:

Modality Signs Character
Movable · Chara ♈ Aries · ♋ Cancer · ♎ Libra · ♑ Capricorn Initiating, active, quick to change, driven to begin
Fixed · Sthira ♉ Taurus · ♌ Leo · ♏ Scorpio · ♒ Aquarius Sustaining, resistant to change, stable, consolidating
Dual · Dwisvabhava ♊ Gemini · ♍ Virgo · ♐ Sagittarius · ♓ Pisces Transitional, adaptable, holding two natures, bridge-builders

Movable signs initiate — they are the cardinal signs of Western astrology. Fixed signs consolidate and sustain. Dual signs (dwisvabhava = two natures) transition between modes, making them adaptable and sometimes ambiguous.

The modality matters significantly in Jaimini astrology, where it determines the direction a dasha sequence runs (forward for odd-footed signs, backward for even-footed).

Dhatu, Mula, Jiva§

A less-discussed but classical tripartite division:

  • Dhatu (mineral): Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn — movable signs, related to inorganic matter
  • Mula (vegetable): Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius — fixed signs, related to plant life
  • Jiva (animate): Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces — dual signs, related to living creatures

This classification is used in determining the nature of objects and events when asked specific questions in horary astrology (prashna).

Odd and Even Signs§

Signs 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11 (Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius, Aquarius) are odd — classified as masculine, diurnal, active. Signs 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 (Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn, Pisces) are even — feminine, nocturnal, receptive. This distinction affects aspects (some traditions hold that planets in odd signs cast aspects differently), and is used in determining the sex of a native or an event in horary.

Signs are the vocabulary of the sky. Every planet speaks through the sign it occupies, and every reading begins with noting not just which planet is where but how that sign shapes the planet's expression. A benefic in a difficult sign is still a benefic — but the sign sets the stage. See the individual sign pages — Aries through Pisces — for each sign's lord, exaltation, and house expression. Planetary dignity covers how a sign affects a planet's strength. In Jaimini, the Rashi Drishti system uses sign modality to determine which signs aspect each other. See signs in your chart.
