The Second House — Dhana Bhava

Sanskrit name Dhana Bhava — house of wealth
Classification Maraka · Artha (wealth)
Natural karaka Jupiter
Natural sign · lord ♉ Taurus · Venus

Dhana means wealth, but the second house is about more than money. It is the house of accumulated resources — the family one is born into, the speech and voice, the face (mouth, eyes, right eye specifically), and the food one eats. These apparently disparate significations share a common root: they are all part of what surrounds and sustains the native from the earliest years of life.

Wealth and Accumulation§

The primary signification is material wealth — the ability to earn, accumulate, and hold onto resources. Planets here affect the native's relationship to money and possessions. A strong benefic in the 2nd (Jupiter, Venus, well-placed Mercury) typically supports financial accumulation. A strong malefic (Saturn, Mars) can bring wealth through effort but may also indicate fluctuations or a difficult relationship with money.

The 2nd lord's placement is equally important: a 2nd lord in the 11th (house of gains) is an exceptionally favorable configuration for wealth. A 2nd lord in the 12th (house of expenditure) tends toward financial leakage.

Speech and Voice§

The 2nd house governs speech — not just the act of communicating (that's Mercury and the 3rd house) but the specific quality of the voice and what the native says with it. A strong Mercury or Jupiter in the 2nd tends to produce eloquent, effective speech. Saturn here can make speech slow, measured, or harsh. Mars here often produces direct, blunt, or sharp language.

Public speakers, teachers, singers, and actors often have strong 2nd house configurations.

Family and Early Life§

The 2nd house represents the family of origin — the household one is born into, rather than the household one creates (which is the 4th). The quality of the early family environment, the family's collective resources, and one's relationship to ancestral lineage all fall here.

The Maraka Quality§

The 2nd house is one of the two maraka (death-inflicting) houses. Its lord and occupants, when running dasha periods in old age and coinciding with certain transit configurations, are associated with the ending of life. In younger people, 2nd house dashas more typically affect wealth, speech, or family circumstances — the maraka dimension only becomes literal near the end of a long life.

A well-supported 2nd house — strong lord, benefic occupants, karaka Jupiter well-placed — is one of the clearest indicators of sustained material well-being in a chart. An afflicted 2nd does not guarantee poverty, but it suggests wealth comes with greater effort or instability. The natural sign of the 2nd house is Taurus. See the houses overview for the maraka framework, and the Ashtakavarga section for a strength scoring approach to the 2nd house.
