The Eleventh House — Labha Bhava
| Sanskrit name | Labha Bhava — house of gains |
| Classification | Upachaya · Kama (desire) |
| Natural karaka | ♃ Jupiter |
| Natural sign · lord | ♒ Aquarius · ♄ Saturn |
Labha means gain, profit, and attainment. The 11th is the house of desires fulfilled — not the desire itself (which belongs to various houses by type) but the satisfaction of desire. It is also the house of income from profession (distinct from the profession itself, which is the 10th), and the place in the chart where sustained effort eventually converts into material reward.
Gains and Income§
The 11th governs financial gains — specifically, the income stream from one's professional activity. A strong 11th lord supports consistent income and the ability to convert work into financial return. The 11th lord's position relative to the 10th lord (the career) and the 2nd lord (accumulated wealth) reveals how smoothly work converts into prosperity.
Large windfalls, unexpected income, and profits from business ventures beyond the immediate career all have 11th house associations.
Fulfillment of Desires§
The 11th is one of the kama houses (1/5/7/11 in the desire quadrant), and it is where the other three kama houses' desires find their resolution. The 1st wants self-expression; the 5th wants creativity and children; the 7th wants partnership. The 11th is the house of getting what you wanted from all of those domains.
Elder Siblings and Friends§
The 11th governs elder siblings — those born before the native — in contrast to the 3rd house, which governs younger siblings. Social networks, friends, and well-wishers who support the native without formal obligation also belong here. The quality of the 11th house shows whether the native tends to have a supportive social network or whether social connections tend to be transactional or unreliable.
The Complex Status of the 11th Lord§
The 11th house is considered an upachaya house where the topics (gains) are always welcome. However, the lord of the 11th is traditionally considered a functional malefic for most lagnas. The reasoning: the 11th is the 3rd from the 9th (fortune) and the 6th from the 6th — positions that drain important houses. The 11th lord's natural disposition is oriented toward worldly accumulation, which in excess can dilute dharmic orientation.
In practice, the 11th lord in the 10th (gains through career) or the 2nd (wealth accumulation) produces fine results. The caution applies when the 11th lord aspects or occupies spiritually important houses like the 5th, 9th, or 12th, where its materialistic influence can undercut the higher purposes of those houses.
The Upachaya Quality§
Like all upachaya houses, the 11th rewards malefics. Saturn in the 11th — in its own sign Aquarius for many lagnas — can produce exceptional gains through disciplined effort over time. Mars in the 11th gives competitive drive that converts into material wins. Benefics here do produce gains, but the strongest results come from planets that thrive in the domain of accumulation and effort.
The 11th is where the chart's efforts pay off. A strong 11th lord, well-placed with benefic support, is a reliable indicator of the native's capacity to generate income, satisfy material desires, and build a supportive social network. Without a functional 11th, even excellent career configurations (10th house) may struggle to convert talent into tangible reward. The natural sign of the 11th house is Aquarius, and its natural karaka is Jupiter. See the houses overview for the upachaya context.
