The Eighth House — Ayur Bhava
| Sanskrit name | Ayur Bhava — house of longevity |
| Classification | Dusthana · Moksha |
| Natural karaka | ♄ Saturn |
| Natural sign · lord | ♏ Scorpio · ♂ Mars |
Ayur means lifespan. The 8th house is simultaneously the house of death and the house of longevity — it governs both how long life lasts and how it ultimately ends. This apparent contradiction resolves when you understand that the 8th is the house of transformation: it governs the quality of deep change, the capacity to survive upheaval, and the relationship with what lies beneath ordinary consciousness.
Longevity and the Body§
The 8th house, along with the 1st, is the primary indicator of longevity — how long the physical body persists. A strong 8th house and lord with Saturn (natural karaka) well-placed supports a long life. An afflicted 8th, particularly with malefic planets poorly placed and the 8th lord in a dusthana, can indicate vulnerability to the body's endurance.
Chronic illness — as distinct from acute illness (6th house) — belongs to the 8th. Conditions that transform the body over time, that require sustained management, and that touch the deeper structures of physical existence are 8th house territory.
Death and Endings§
The 8th house describes the circumstances of death — not its timing (which comes from the operation of maraka lords in dasha periods), but the manner of death when it comes. Planets in the 8th and the sign there give clues to the quality of the final transition.
More broadly, the 8th governs endings and discontinuities in general: sudden crises, unexpected events that rupture the normal course of life, the endings of relationships or phases that arrive without warning.
Inheritance and Unearned Resources§
Resources that come without direct personal effort — inheritance, gifts from partners (the 2nd from the 7th), insurance payouts, windfalls — belong to the 8th. This connection to "other people's money" is the reason the 8th house features prominently in the charts of people who work with inherited wealth, insurance, taxes, and financial investigation.
Hidden Knowledge and the Occult§
The 8th governs what is hidden: esoteric knowledge, occult practices, astrology (a Ketu/8th domain), research into hidden causes, forensics, and the investigative capacity to penetrate surfaces. People with strong 8th houses often have unusual access to hidden truths — whether through intuition, investigation, or formal study of esoteric subjects.
Transformation and Regeneration§
The 8th's deepest quality is transformative: it governs the capacity to die and be reborn figuratively — to undergo deep personal change, to survive crisis, to be fundamentally altered by experience. The Scorpio-8th connection (natural sign) reflects this: water's dissolving quality applied to fixed transformation. What enters the 8th house comes out different.
The 8th house is not to be feared in a chart — it is to be understood. A strong, well-supported 8th (a good lord placement, Saturn's karaka role honored) produces resilience, investigative depth, and the capacity for profound transformation. A weak or damaged 8th makes transformation more rupturing than renewing. The natural sign of the 8th house is Scorpio. See the houses overview for the dusthana context and the Viparita Raja Yoga principle.
