Planetary Loyalties
The classical texts describe planets as natural friends, enemies, or neutrals — and those labels are not arbitrary. They come from a single calculation, done once, from a fixed address. It runs the same way for every planet in every chart in every era.
The method: each planet has a mool trikon sign — the sign where its quality runs clearest, its permanent home in the zodiac. From that home, count outward and find where each other planet's sign falls. The house distance determines the relationship.

Reading the Houses§
Number the twelve signs starting from the mool trikon as house one, then continue around the zodiac in natural order. Where another planet's sign lands tells you how the first planet receives the second.

Once you have the house positions, the verdict follows directly:
- A planet with two signs, both landing in friendly houses → best friend
- One sign friendly, one unfriendly → neutral
- Both signs in unfriendly houses → enemy
- A single-sign planet (the Sun or Moon, which each rule only one sign) in a friendly house → friend; unfriendly → enemy
That is the complete rulebook. Everything below is arithmetic.
☽ Moon — from Taurus ♉§
The Moon's mool trikon is unusual. Every other planet's mool trikon sits within a sign it rules. The Moon's does not — Taurus belongs to Venus. The Moon rules Cancer, but its seat of natural authority, the vantage from which its loyalties are counted, is in Taurus.
Walking the zodiac from there: the Sun's Leo lands at the 4th — a friendly house. One sign, one clean position: friend.
Mercury places Gemini at the 2nd and Virgo at the 5th (trikone). Both signs favorable, no reservation — best friend. This is the classical Moon–Mercury alliance, the reason a Moon-Mercury conjunction reads with the specific warmth it does.
Every other planet splits the count. Mars has Aries at the 12th (friendly) but Scorpio at the 7th (unfriendly). Jupiter places Sagittarius at the 8th (friendly) but Pisces at the 11th (unfriendly). Venus lands Taurus at the 1st (trikone — its own sign occupying the Moon's mool trikon) but Libra at the 6th. Saturn: Capricorn at the 9th (trikone) but Aquarius at the 10th. All four split evenly, one foot in each camp. Neutral across the board.
The Moon cannot see a planet in purely hostile territory from Taurus. It makes two friends and zero enemies — the least adversarial vantage in the system.

☉ Sun — from Leo ♌§
The Sun's view from Leo is sharper. Mars lands both its signs in strongly favorable positions: Aries at the 9th (trikone), Scorpio at the 4th. Jupiter does the same — Sagittarius at the 5th (trikone), Pisces at the 8th. When both signs confirm, the relationship becomes best friend, a stronger category than a single favorable placement. The Sun grants this to two planets and no others.
The Moon's Cancer sits at the 12th — friendly. One sign, one clear position: friend. Mercury gives a mixed reading: Virgo at the 2nd is good, but Gemini falls to the 11th. Neutral.
Then the adversaries. Venus places both Libra at the 3rd and Taurus at the 10th — neither house favorable. Saturn is the same: Capricorn at the 6th, Aquarius at the 7th. Both planets land entirely in hostile territory from Leo's count. The Sun names both enemies.

♂ Mars — from Aries ♈§
From Aries, Jupiter places Sagittarius at the 9th (trikone) and Pisces at the 12th. Both signs land in favorable houses without exception. Mars returns the verdict: best friend — and this is one of the most noted alliances in the tradition, two commanders recognizing each other across the field.
The Sun sits alone at the 5th (trikone). The Moon sits alone at the 4th. Both clean, both friendly. Two friends.
Venus divides: Libra falls at the 7th (unfriendly) but Taurus lands at the 2nd (friendly). Neutral.
Mercury and Saturn both land both their signs in hostile territory. Mercury's Virgo is at the 6th, Gemini at the 3rd. Saturn's Capricorn at the 10th, Aquarius at the 11th. Both receive the enemy verdict.

☿ Mercury — from Virgo ♍§
Mercury's mool trikon is Virgo. The Sun's Leo sits just behind it at the 12th — a friendly house, and the Sun rules only one sign, so the verdict is unambiguous: friend.
The Moon's Cancer lands at the 11th — unfriendly. Mercury names the Moon an enemy. Note the asymmetry: the Moon considers Mercury neutral, but Mercury does not return the favor. This kind of one-sided relationship is common in the system and meaningful when you encounter it in a chart.
Venus places both Libra at the 2nd and Taurus at the 9th (trikone). Both friendly, no reservation — best friend. The Venus-Mercury alliance is a tight one, frequently visible in how these two planets work together in charts involving art, trade, and communication.
Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn each split their placements. Mars: Aries at the 8th (friendly), Scorpio at the 3rd (unfriendly). Jupiter: Sagittarius at the 4th (friendly), Pisces at the 7th (unfriendly). Saturn: Capricorn at the 5th (trikone, friendly), Aquarius at the 6th (unfriendly). All three land at neutral.

From Sagittarius, Mars again shows as a best friend — Aries at the 5th (trikone), Scorpio at the 12th, both favorable. Jupiter confirms what Mars said: the relationship is mutual and doubled.
The Sun lands at the 9th (trikone). The Moon at the 8th. Both single-sign planets in clearly friendly houses. Jupiter names both as friends.
Mercury and Venus are a different story. Mercury's Virgo sits at the 10th, Gemini at the 7th — both unfriendly. Venus's Libra at the 11th, Taurus at the 6th — both unfriendly. Jupiter declares both enemies without ambiguity. The traditional framing puts the natural benefic at odds with the commercial planets. From Sagittarius's ledger, both philosophy and governance are hostile to trade.
Saturn splits: Capricorn lands at the 2nd (friendly) but Aquarius falls at the 3rd (unfriendly). Neutral.

Counting from Libra, the Sun's Leo falls at the 11th — unfriendly. The Moon's Cancer falls at the 10th — also unfriendly. Both enemies. Jupiter places Sagittarius at the 3rd and Pisces at the 6th, both hostile. Venus adds Jupiter to the list. Three enemies from one vantage.
The allies are equally firm. Mercury puts both Virgo at the 12th and Gemini at the 9th (trikone) in friendly houses. Best friend. Saturn places Capricorn at the 4th and Aquarius at the 5th (trikone) — both favorable. Best friend. The Venus–Mercury and Venus–Saturn pairings run through the classical literature as reliable, reinforcing combinations.
Mars splits the difference: Aries at the 7th is hostile, but Scorpio lands at the 2nd, which is friendly. Neutral.

♄ Saturn — from Aquarius ♒§
Saturn's view from Aquarius is the most adversarial of all seven. The Sun's Leo sits at the 7th — hostile. The Moon's Cancer at the 6th — hostile. Mars lands both Aries at the 3rd and Scorpio at the 10th — both hostile. Three planets, three enemies. Saturn disputes authority (Sun), sentiment (Moon), and fire (Mars) in equal measure.
Mercury places Virgo at the 8th and Gemini at the 5th (trikone), both favorable — best friend. Venus places Libra at the 9th (trikone) and Taurus at the 4th, both favorable — also best friend. The same Mercury-Venus-Saturn cluster that appears in Venus's section shows up again here from the other direction: the alliance is built into the geometry.
Jupiter lands one sign friendly (Pisces at the 2nd) and one unfriendly (Sagittarius at the 11th). Neutral.

The Full Matrix§
The relationships are not always symmetric — the Sun considers Mercury neutral but Mercury considers the Sun a friend. That asymmetry is deliberate and consistent. Each planet is looking from its own home, not from a shared center.

A few patterns worth noting. The Moon never declares an enemy — from Taurus, no planet's signs ever both land in hostile houses. Saturn is the mirror: it declares three enemies (Sun, Moon, Mars) and no plain friends, only best friends and a neutral. The Mercury–Venus–Saturn triangle forms a closed loop of mutual appreciation that the tradition treats as a stable, self-reinforcing cluster. And the Sun-Mars-Jupiter axis runs warmly in both directions — each of these three considers the others at minimum a friend.
These are the naisargika (natural) relationships — fixed across all charts. A planet's relationship to another changes in a given chart based on the actual positions of their signs relative to each other (tatkalika, or temporary relationships), and the compound of both produces the panchadha maitri, the five-fold friendship scale.
