The First House — Lagna Bhava

Sanskrit name Lagna Bhava · Tanu Bhava
Classification Kendra · Trikona · Dharma
Natural karaka Sun
Natural sign · lord ♈ Aries · Mars

The first house is the lagna — the ascendant. It is the most personal house in the chart, because it is determined not by birthdate but by the exact time and place of birth: the degree rising on the eastern horizon at the moment of the first breath. Change the birth time by two hours and the lagna changes. This is why birth time matters.

Tanu means body. The first house governs the physical constitution, the appearance, the overall vitality and health. But it is also the self — the personality as it meets the world, the disposition and manner, the central quality of the individual's experience.

What the First House Governs§

The head and face (physically), the overall constitution and strength of the body, the complexion, the personality and temperament, the sense of self and identity, longevity, and the first breath of life itself. It is the house of self-expression in the most fundamental sense.

The first house is also the first dharma house (it belongs to the 1-5-9 trikona), which means it contains within it the person's dharmic orientation — not as philosophy (that's the 9th) but as basic identity. Who is this person, at the level of their first nature?

The Lagna Lord§

The lord of the first house — the planet that rules the sign on the ascendant — is the lagnesh, one of the most important planets in any chart. Its placement determines where the native's core energy is directed. A lagnesh in the 10th house orients the native toward career and public achievement. A lagnesh in the 12th creates a more inward or isolated orientation. A lagnesh in the 7th places the core of identity in relationship.

The strength of the lagnesh directly correlates with the strength and health of the physical body and the overall vitality of the life.

Planets in the First House§

Any planet in the first house influences the personality and body directly, coloring the self with its own nature:

  • Sun: Strong sense of self, leadership quality, sometimes pride or ego sensitivity
  • Moon: Emotionally responsive, changeable, drawn toward public or nurturing roles
  • Mars: Energetic, assertive, sometimes combative; physical vitality is typically strong
  • Mercury: Intellectual orientation, communicative personality, curious
  • Jupiter: Expansive, philosophical, generous; may indicate a larger body or optimistic disposition
  • Venus: Charming, aesthetically oriented, socially graceful
  • Saturn: Serious, restrained, cautious; may bring physical delays or a lanky build
  • Rahu: Unconventional, magnetic, boundary-crossing; the self has an unusual or foreign quality
  • Ketu: Detached, spiritual, sometimes physically unusual; a quality of otherworldliness

Every reading begins here. Before examining any house, relationship, or period, the first house and its lord set the baseline: how strong, how resilient, how clearly expressed is this person's capacity to live their chart? The natural sign of the 1st house is Aries, and its natural karaka is the Sun. See the houses overview for how the 1st relates to the kendra-trikona system. Find your lagna in your chart.
