The Seventh House — Kalatra Bhava

Sanskrit name Kalatra Bhava — house of spouse
Classification Kendra · Maraka · Kama (desire)
Natural karakas Venus (men) · Jupiter (women)
Natural sign · lord ♎ Libra · Venus

Kalatra means spouse or partner. The 7th house is the primary house of marriage and long-term committed partnership. It sits directly opposite the lagna — the self meets the other at the 7th house. Every planet aspects the 7th from its own position, making the 7th house the most universally aspected house in every chart.

Marriage and Spouse§

The 7th house describes the marriage relationship — its quality, timing, the nature of the partner, and whether marriage brings happiness or friction. Key factors:

  • The 7th lord: Its sign, house placement, and dignity show the quality of the marriage and the partner's nature. A 7th lord in the 10th suggests a partner oriented toward career and public life. A 7th lord in the 12th suggests a private, perhaps foreign, or spiritually oriented partner.
  • Venus (for men) and Jupiter (for women): These karakas show the spouse more specifically. A strong, well-placed Venus in a man's chart with good dignity supports a happy marriage. An afflicted Venus — debilitated, combust, or aspected by malefics — complicates marriage prospects.
  • Planets in the 7th: These directly color the marriage. Jupiter here tends to bring a wise, generous partner. Saturn here brings a serious, dutiful, sometimes older partner, and may delay marriage. Mars here (Kuja Dosha) can bring passion alongside conflict.

Partnerships and Business§

Beyond marriage, the 7th governs all one-on-one partnerships — business partnerships, close collaborative relationships, and any formal agreement between two parties as equals. The quality of the 7th house reflects whether partnerships in general tend to be supportive or fraught.

Open Enemies§

The 7th also governs open enemies — those who oppose the native directly, face-to-face, as opposed to the hidden enemies of the 12th house. Legal opponents in a lawsuit, declared adversaries, those the native is in direct confrontation with — all fall in the 7th.

This is the paradox of the 7th house: the same house governs both intimate partnership and open opposition. Both require the same fundamental act: meeting another person directly and squarely, whether in love or in conflict.

The Maraka Dimension§

The 7th is the second maraka house (along with the 2nd). Its lord and occupants, when running periods near the end of a long life, can be associated with mortality. In earlier life, 7th house periods more typically bring marriage, partnership changes, or relational pivots.

Foreign Travel and Trade§

The 7th house has secondary associations with foreign travel (particularly travel for purposes of trade or partnership) and with commerce in the international or long-distance sense. This connection comes through Libra's natural 7th placement — Libra governs exchange, trade, and the balance of two parties.

The 7th house teaches one consistent lesson: no one lives in the lagna alone. The self, however strong, encounters others — and those encounters, whether in love or conflict, shape everything. The natural sign of the 7th house is Libra, and its natural karaka is Venus (for men) and Jupiter (for women). In Jaimini, the Upapada Lagna gives a dedicated lagna for reading the marriage bond. See the houses overview for the kendra and maraka roles of the 7th.
