The Sun is the atmakaraka — the significator of the soul. Where other planets rule domains of outer life, the Sun points inward: it is the part of a person that knows itself, that stands for something, that cannot be wholly bent to circumstance. In Jyotish the Sun does not represent the personality (that belongs to the lagna and its lord) but the deeper animating spark — the sense of dignity and purpose that underlies everything else.
Its external significations follow from this inner role: authority, government, the father, rulers and administrators, medicine and the physician (the healing light), the spine and the heart. Wherever the Sun sits in a chart, it illuminates that house's domain — but illumination without tact can also scorch. Planets that come too close to the Sun go combust, losing their independent signal in the solar fire. See combustion and retrogression for the degree thresholds.
Exaltation and Debilitation§
The Sun exalts in Aries at 10°, the beginning of the zodiac's first fire sign — a fitting placement for the planet of sovereignty. Aries is ruled by Mars, the Sun's ally, and the 10th-degree mark falls in a nakshatra (Ashwini) associated with horses and swiftness. The Sun here is bold, direct, clear.
In Libra at 10° the Sun is debilitated. Libra is ruled by Venus, the Sun's natural enemy. The sign asks for compromise, diplomacy, and yielding to others' perspectives — none of which come naturally to solar energy. A debilitated Sun does not disappear; it struggles to assert itself comfortably, especially around themes of self-expression, confidence, and receiving recognition.
The debilitation can be cancelled (neecha bhanga) if Venus — the sign's lord — is strong, in a kendra from the lagna or Moon, or if Mars (the sign of the Sun's exaltation) occupies a kendra. A cancelled debilitation often produces a planet that is stronger in practice than it appears on paper.
The Soul Significator§
In Jyotish's karaka scheme, the Sun is the naisargika karaka (natural significator) for:
- Atma — the individual soul, self-realization, purpose
- Father — specifically the biological father, his health and status
- Government and authority — one's relationship to official power structures
- Health and vitality — the body's fundamental life force
A well-placed Sun — in its own sign, exaltation, a friendly sign, or a kendra/trikona — gives confidence, leadership quality, and a coherent sense of self. An afflicted Sun (debilitated, combust other planets it conjuncts, hemmed between malefics) can manifest as ego difficulties, fraught father relationships, or trouble with authority.
Combustion§
The Sun's proximity scorches other planets. A planet within roughly 8° of the Sun (variable by planet) is combust — it still functions, but its light is drowned in the solar glare. Combustion is one of Jyotish's primary dignity-reducing conditions.
The Moon within 12° of the Sun is the dark Moon (amavasya) — emotionally thin, lacking independence of mind. Mercury is almost always close to the Sun and is somewhat immune to full combustion by traditional reckoning, though within 3° it is said to be moudha (in the dust). Venus and Mars combust lose their natural qualities in proportion to their closeness.
Sun in the Dasha Sequence§
The Sun's 6-year mahadasha is one of the shorter periods in the Vimshottari cycle. It sits between Moon (10 years) and Ketu (7 years) in the sequence. Sun dasha activates themes of recognition, authority, career clarity, and the father. Its quality depends entirely on the natal Sun: a strong Sun in a good house and sign produces a period of advancement and visibility; a weak or afflicted Sun can bring ego conflicts, health concerns related to the heart or spine, or strained relationships with father figures and employers.
Nakshatras§
The Sun rules three nakshatras in the Vimshottari Dasha system: Krittika, Uttara Phalguni, and Uttara Ashadha. All three carry the Sun's quality of discriminating fire — Krittika cuts and purifies in Aries and Taurus, Uttara Phalguni brings solar warmth into Virgo's harvest, and Uttara Ashadha carries the Sun's final assertion into the Capricorn threshold. These are nakshatras of completion, authority, and the will that does not compromise.
The Sun asks one thing of the chart: who is this person, at their most essential? Every other planet answers different questions — about action, relationship, communication, wealth, faith. The Sun answers the question of self. Its home sign is Leo; its planetary dignity and natural friendships shape how freely it can deliver on that promise. See the Sun in your own chart.
