The Navagrahas

Nava means nine. Graha means seizer — not planet in the modern astronomical sense, but an entity that grips or influences. The navagrahas are the nine bodies through which Jyotish reads a chart: seven classical planets and two mathematical points derived from the Moon's orbit.

The Seven Classical Grahas§

Graha Rules Significations
Sun Surya ♌ Leo Soul, authority, father, government. Burns what it contacts too closely.
Moon Chandra ♋ Cancer Mind, emotion, mother, nourishment. Waxing = benefic; waning = malefic. Changes sign every ~2.5 days.
Mars Mangala ♈ Aries
♏ Scorpio
Energy, courage, siblings, fire, surgery. Natural malefic. Special aspects: 4th, 7th, 8th.
Mercury Budha ♍ Virgo
♊ Gemini
Intellect, speech, commerce, mathematics. Neutral — takes the colour of its companions. Never more than 28° from the Sun.
Jupiter Guru ♐ Sagittarius
♓ Pisces
Wisdom, dharma, children, teachers, expansion. The great benefic. Special aspects: 5th, 7th, 9th. ~12 year cycle.
Venus Shukra ♎ Libra
♉ Taurus
Desire, beauty, relationships, luxury, arts. The other great benefic. Never more than 48° from the Sun.
Saturn Shani ♒ Aquarius
♑ Capricorn
Discipline, delay, longevity, karma, limitation. Natural malefic. Special aspects: 3rd, 7th, 10th. ~29.5 year cycle.

The Two Lunar Nodes§

Rahu and Ketu are not physical bodies — they are the two points where the Moon's orbit crosses the ecliptic. They are always exactly 180° apart and always in retrograde motion.

Rahu North Node Amplifies and obsesses. Worldly desire, ambition, foreignness, unconventional paths. Acts like Saturn, sometimes Jupiter.
Ketu South Node Separates and dissolves. Spirituality, liberation, past-life patterns. The headless body — acts without intellect. Acts like Mars.

Natural Benefics and Malefics§

The navagrahas divide into two camps by default nature:

Natural benefics — ♃ Jupiter · ♀ Venus · ☽ Moon (waxing) · ☿ Mercury (alone)

Natural malefics — ♄ Saturn · ♂ Mars · ☉ Sun · ☽ Moon (waning) · ☊ Rahu · ☋ Ketu

This classification is just a baseline. A planet's functional role in a specific chart — determined by which houses it rules for a given lagna — can override it entirely. Saturn becomes a yogakaraka for Taurus and Libra lagnas. Jupiter can become a functional malefic for Capricorn and Aquarius lagnas. The natural nature is a default; functional nature is chart-specific. Planetary loyalties covers the natural friendship relationships between grahas in full.

Nine grahas, one chart, infinite combinations. Each graha contributes a distinct quality and governs specific domains of life. Understanding the navagrahas — their natural temperament, the signs they rule, and the houses they occupy in a given chart — is the foundation everything else in Jyotish is built on. Cast your chart to see where each graha falls in your sky.
