Drishti — Planetary Aspects
Drishti means sight or glance. In Jyotish, every planet casts an aspect — a directed influence — on certain houses counted from its own position. Unlike Western astrology, where aspects are measured by degree between planets, Jyotish aspects are measured by house: a planet aspects the entire house it gazes upon, regardless of exact degree.
The strength of the aspect depends on the aspecting planet's dignity, not on the angular distance from an exact degree.
The Universal 7th Aspect§
Every planet — without exception — aspects the house exactly opposite its position, the 7th house from where it sits. This is the primary aspect, the full glance. A planet in the 1st house aspects the 7th. A planet in the 3rd house aspects the 9th. A planet in the 8th aspects the 2nd.
The 7th aspect is mutual: if planet A is in the 1st and aspects the 7th, any planet sitting in the 7th also aspects back to the 1st. This creates a direct, clear exchange of energy between the two houses and any planets occupying them.
Special Aspects§
Three planets — Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn — cast additional aspects beyond the standard 7th:
| Planet | Special aspects (plus universal 7th) | |
|---|---|---|
| ♂ | Mars | 4th and 8th from its position |
| ♃ | Jupiter | 5th and 9th from its position |
| ♄ | Saturn | 3rd and 10th from its position |
All three special aspects carry full strength — the same force as the 7th aspect. There is no half-strength or quarter-strength grading in the Parashari system for these aspects (some later systems add that nuance, but the classical texts treat all three as full-strength).
Reading the Aspects in Practice§
When a planet aspects a house, its significations and qualities color that house's affairs. The interpretation depends on:
The aspecting planet's nature. Jupiter aspecting the 7th brings wisdom, good judgment, and generosity to partnership matters. Saturn aspecting the 7th brings delay, testing, or serious, dutiful relationships. Mars aspecting the 7th introduces conflict and passion.
The aspecting planet's dignity. An exalted Jupiter aspecting a house does far more good than a debilitated one. A combust Mars aspecting a house weakens its ability to deliver results, for better or worse.
The aspecting planet's role in the chart. A Jupiter that rules the 2nd and 5th for a Scorpio lagna brings different themes when aspecting the 7th than a Jupiter that rules the 8th and 11th for a Taurus lagna.
Rahu and Ketu Aspects§
The classical texts vary on whether Rahu and Ketu cast aspects. The most common positions:
- In Parashari analysis, Rahu and Ketu cast a 7th aspect only, like ordinary planets.
- Some traditions give Rahu additional aspects at the 5th and 9th (similar to Jupiter, reflecting Rahu's Jupiter-like side), and Ketu additional aspects at the 4th and 8th (reflecting its Mars-like nature).
- In the KP system, Rahu and Ketu have no independent aspects — they act as agents of their dispositor.
Moonketu's chart display shows all aspected houses from each planet's position.
What Aspects Do and Don't Do§
Aspects modify and influence — they do not substitute for placement. A benefic aspecting the 7th house is not the same as a benefic placed in the 7th house. The direct placement is more powerful; the aspect is a secondary influence. An aspect from a strong Jupiter can protect or improve a house even when it is not placed there; it cannot, however, produce the full results that placement would bring.
Similarly, a malefic aspecting a house is more of a stressor than a malefic sitting in that house — the aspect is uncomfortable but less damaging than direct occupation.
The aspect system is what gives every planet reach beyond its own house. A planet placed in the 9th, for instance, directly influences the 9th — but through its aspects it also casts influence on the 3rd (via universal 7th), and for Jupiter, also on the 1st (5th aspect) and 5th (9th aspect). No planet is confined to one corner of the chart. Jaimini adds a parallel layer: Rashi Drishti is sign-based aspect, where the sign itself casts aspects on other signs regardless of which planets occupy them. Both systems operate simultaneously.
