The Sixth House — Ari Bhava
| Sanskrit name | Ari Bhava — house of enemies |
| Classification | Dusthana · Upachaya · Artha (wealth through work) |
| Natural karakas | ♄ Saturn · ♂ Mars |
| Natural sign · lord | ♍ Virgo · ☿ Mercury |
Ari means enemy. The 6th house covers enemies, opponents, and all forms of opposition the native encounters in life. But it is equally the house of the effort required to overcome those enemies — which is why it belongs to both the dusthanas (houses of trouble) and the upachayas (houses that improve with time). The 6th is where the native fights, and it rewards those who fight well.
Enemies and Opposition§
The 6th house covers open and declared enemies (the 12th house governs secret enemies and self-undoing). Workplace conflicts, litigation opponents, competitors in business, people who actively work against the native's interests — all fall here. The strength of the 6th house and its lord partly determines whether the native tends to attract opposition and how effectively they handle it.
Disease and Health Challenges§
After the 1st house (which governs the body's constitution), the 6th is the primary health house — specifically chronic illness, recurring conditions, and the general susceptibility to disease. The 6th lord's placement and condition, and planets in the 6th, show the areas of physical vulnerability.
Saturn in the 6th can indicate chronic conditions related to bones, joints, or cold constitution. Mars here can mean inflammatory or feverish tendencies. Rahu in the 6th is associated with unusual or hard-to-diagnose conditions.
A strong 6th house configuration in the chart of a physician or healer is common — the ability to work with disease, rather than being overcome by it, is a 6th house strength.
Debt and Financial Obligation§
The 6th house governs loans, debts, and financial obligations owed to others. An afflicted 6th can mean a pattern of debt; a strong 6th (particularly with good malefics) shows the ability to manage financial obligations and pay them off. Borrowing for productive purposes — a mortgage on real estate, a business loan — is different from unmanageable consumer debt; the 6th encompasses both.
Service and Employees§
The 6th is the house of service — both giving it and receiving it. Employees who work under the native are 6th house territory. The quality of the native's relationship to employees, their reliability and efficiency, and the native's own capacity for productive work are all 6th house concerns.
The Upachaya Principle§
Malefics in the 6th are considered favorable in the classical framework. Saturn here defeats enemies through endurance; Mars here defeats them through force; Rahu here can be relentless and cunning. The 6th is one of the houses where natural malefics find their best expression — because the house demands the qualities they naturally provide.
Natural benefics in the 6th (Jupiter, Venus, strong Mercury) are considered less ideally placed — not necessarily harmful, but unable to express their full positive quality in the dusthana environment.
The 6th house is the house of the daily fight. Its condition doesn't determine whether a person encounters opposition — that's universal. It determines how well-equipped they are to handle it. The natural sign of the 6th house is Virgo, and its natural karakas are Saturn and Mars. See the houses overview for the dusthana-upachaya overlap that makes this house unique.
