Karakamsha — The Soul's Navamsha Lagna
The navamsha (D9) is a divisional chart — each sign is divided into nine equal parts of 3°20'. Every planet occupies a specific navamsha sign based on its exact degree. The sign the Atmakaraka occupies in the navamsha is called the Karakamsha — "karaka's sign."
The Karakamsha is then read back into the rashi chart as if it were a lagna. The bhava that corresponds to the Karakamsha sign in the rashi becomes a lagna of the soul's deepest purpose.
What the Karakamsha Reveals§
The birth lagna shows the circumstances of birth — the physical body, the approach to life, the surface expression. The Arudha Lagna shows the public image, the world's perception of the person. The Karakamsha shows the soul's dharma — what it has come specifically to do in this life.
Where planets aspect or occupy the Karakamsha (by Rashi Drishti), those themes become the soul's curriculum. Jupiter's influence on the Karakamsha via Rashi Drishti tends to produce teachers, priests, and those with a philosophical purpose. Ketu on or aspecting the Karakamsha by rashi aspect indicates moksha orientation — the soul is working toward liberation rather than accumulation.
Swamsha§
When the Atmakaraka occupies the same sign in the navamsha as the navamsha lagna itself — meaning the navamsha lagna's sign is also the Karakamsha — this is called Swamsha ("own portion"). It is considered highly auspicious and strengthening.
Reading the Karakamsha§
The Karakamsha is read the same way a lagna is read: count bhavas from it. The 2nd bhava from the Karakamsha shows the soul's primary means of livelihood; the 5th shows the nature of the wisdom or creativity the soul carries; the 10th shows the soul's dharmic contribution to society.
Planets sitting in the Karakamsha sign in the rashi chart are called the Karakamsha conjunctions and have strong influence on the soul's expressed purpose:
| Planet in Karakamsha (rashi) | Indication |
|---|---|
| ☉ Sun | Government service, medicine, authority. The soul's purpose involves public responsibility or the healing arts. |
| ☽ Moon | Agriculture, water, emotional or nurturing work. A compassionate public role; interest in the mind and psychology. |
| ♂ Mars | Engineering, surgery, military, land. The soul's purpose involves technical mastery or working with physical force. |
| ☿ Mercury | Commerce, writing, language, scholarship. Strong Mercury here often produces authors, traders, or educators. |
| ♃ Jupiter | Philosophy, teaching, dharmic counsel. The soul's purpose is openly spiritual or intellectual — a natural guru or advisor. |
| ♀ Venus | Fine arts, music, beauty, luxury trade. The soul expresses itself through aesthetic creation or the cultivation of pleasure. |
| ♄ Saturn | Service to the masses, public infrastructure, labor. Soul purpose often involves long, patient work on behalf of others. |
| ☊ Rahu | Technical innovation, foreign connections, unconventional paths. Often produces those working at the edge of convention. |
| ☋ Ketu | Moksha orientation — liberation, mysticism, renunciation. The soul's ultimate purpose transcends worldly accumulation. Often marks those with spiritual gifts or past-life expertise that cannot easily be "unlearned." |
The Karakamsha and Moksha§
Ketu's connection to the Karakamsha — whether sitting in it or aspecting it via Rashi Drishti — is one of the clearest indicators of a chart oriented toward liberation. Jupiter's influence combined with Ketu on the Karakamsha is classically associated with high spiritual attainment. Venus's influence can indicate devotional bhakti paths. The 12th bhava from the Karakamsha (the moksha bhava) and its contents reveal the style and ease of that liberation.
The Karakamsha is the chart's deepest interior lagna. The birth lagna is where you begin; the Arudha Lagna is how others see you; the Karakamsha is what the soul is here to become. A full Jaimini reading holds all three simultaneously. The Karakamsha requires knowing the Atmakaraka's D9 sign — see Navamsha for how the D9 is calculated. Ketu in the Karakamsha is the strongest indicator of a moksha-oriented soul. Cast your chart and find your AK's navamsha sign to locate your Karakamsha.
