Planetary Dignity

A planet's dignity describes how comfortable and functional it is in the sign it currently occupies. Some signs amplify a planet's nature; others constrain it. The tradition identifies four key positions along this spectrum.

The Four Positions§

Exaltation — uccha. The sign where a planet expresses most powerfully. Not merely comfortable — operating at peak capacity. Exalted planets can do more, reach further, and sustain better outcomes. Each planet has one exaltation sign and one specific degree of maximum power within it.

Own Sign / Mool Trikon — sva. The planet's home territory. It rules this sign and operates freely, without interference. The mool trikon sign is slightly stronger than the second own sign for planets that rule two. Consistent and effective if not spectacular.

Neutral Territory. Signs ruled by natural friends or enemies modify function modestly. In a friend's sign the planet finds support; in an enemy's sign it meets friction. Neither state is dramatic on its own.

Debilitation — neecha. The sign diametrically opposite the exaltation sign. The planet is at its weakest, unable to operate as intended. Its significations may fail to materialise, arrive delayed, or manifest in distorted form. Debilitation is not permanent damage — other factors can mitigate it significantly.

The Exaltation Table§

Graha Exaltation Peak Degree Debilitation
☉ Sun ♈ Aries 10° ♎ Libra
☽ Moon ♉ Taurus ♏ Scorpio
♂ Mars ♑ Capricorn 28° ♋ Cancer
☿ Mercury ♍ Virgo 15° ♓ Pisces
♃ Jupiter ♋ Cancer ♑ Capricorn
♀ Venus ♓ Pisces 27° ♍ Virgo
♄ Saturn ♎ Libra 20° ♈ Aries
☊ Rahu ♊ Gemini ♐ Sagittarius
☋ Ketu ♐ Sagittarius ♊ Gemini

Rahu and Ketu exaltation/debilitation varies by school; shown here is one widely-used scheme.

Vargottama — the Identical Degree§

Vargottama means "best in the division." A planet is vargottama when it occupies the same sign in the birth chart (D1) and the Navamsha (D9) simultaneously. It behaves "purely" — expressing the core quality of its sign without the distortion that happens when the D9 sign differs from the D1. The tradition treats it as highly auspicious, even capable of offsetting mild debility in some cases.

Neecha Bhanga — Cancellation of Debility§

A debilitated planet is not always as weak as the label implies. Several configurations can cancel the debilitation — neecha bhanga — and in some cases even convert weakness into a powerful rise:

  1. The lord of the debilitation sign is in a kendra (1, 4, 7, 10) from the lagna or Moon
  2. The planet that would be exalted in that same sign is in a kendra from lagna or Moon
  3. The debilitated planet itself is in a kendra from lagna
  4. The lord of the debilitation sign aspects the debilitated planet

When neecha bhanga applies, the planet often brings strong results in the material world — sometimes stronger than a straightforwardly dignified planet. The struggle implied by debilitation, when overcome, can produce exceptional drive and achievement.

Dignity is a starting point, not a verdict. An exalted planet in a dusthana house may struggle to benefit the native despite its inherent strength. A debilitated planet aspected by its dispositor lord and placed in the 9th house may deliver remarkable results. The chart is always read as a whole.
