Gochara — Transits
Gochara means going or movement — the current positions of planets in the sky as they transit through the zodiac, measured against the fixed positions of the natal chart. Transits are one of Jyotish's two primary predictive tools; the other is the dasha system. Neither is complete without the other.
The Basic Framework§
In Western astrology, transits are typically measured as aspects between current planet positions and natal planet positions (degree to degree). In Jyotish, the standard method measures transits by house: which natal house is the transiting planet currently occupying? This house-based reading is more relevant than the degree-to-degree aspect approach in most classical analysis.
The reference point for measuring transits varies by technique:
- From the natal Moon (most common): The Moon's natal sign is treated as the 1st house, and transits are read relative to it. This is the Chandra Lagna method.
- From the natal lagna: The ascendant sign is the 1st house. Some practitioners favor this for outer, career-related matters.
- From the natal Sun: Used by some schools for father-related and authority themes.
Reading from the Moon is the most widely used approach in classical transit analysis.
Ashtakavarga Influence§
Raw house position alone does not determine a transit's quality. A planet transiting a house that it has high Ashtakavarga bindus in will produce stronger results than one transiting a house with low bindus. This is one reason the Ashtakavarga system (see that page) is integral to transit interpretation.
Saturn Transits§
Saturn moves slowly — roughly 2.5 years per sign, 29.5 years for a full zodiac cycle. Its transits are among the most felt in experience, precisely because of the duration. Key Saturn transits relative to the natal Moon:
Sade Sati (seven and a half years): Saturn transiting through three consecutive signs — one sign before the natal Moon, through the natal Moon's sign, and one sign after. Each leg takes about 2.5 years. Its themes: slowdown, increased responsibility, testing of stability, and — in the tradition's more nuanced view — an opportunity for sustained effort and character development. The quality depends heavily on Saturn's natal placement and dignity.
Ashtama Shani (Saturn in the 8th from natal Moon): Saturn transiting the 8th from the natal Moon is considered one of the more difficult single transits, associated with obstacles, health concerns, and unexpected complications. It lasts about 2.5 years.
Saturn in the 11th from Moon: Traditionally considered favorable — Saturn transiting the upachaya 11th house from the natal Moon brings gains and fulfillment of goals through disciplined effort.
Jupiter Transits§
Jupiter moves roughly one sign per year. Its annual transit through signs activates those houses in relation to the natal Moon (and lagna). Key Jupiter transits:
Jupiter in the 1st from Moon: A period of expansion, confidence, and opportunity. Considered one of the more broadly positive Jupiter transits.
Jupiter in the 8th from Moon: More challenging — Jupiter's expansive energy in the house of hidden things and transformation can mean hidden obstacles or disruption beneath an apparently positive surface.
Jupiter in the 5th and 9th from Moon: Classic trikone transits, associated with spiritual opportunity, fortune, and creative or dharmic development.
Rahu-Ketu Transits (18-Month Cycle)§
The nodes move approximately 18 months per sign (always retrograde). Their axis shift is one of the major predictive events in a Jyotishi's calendar. When Rahu transits the natal Moon's sign or aspects it closely, emotional turbulence and unexpected events are common. Ketu transiting the Moon's sign tends to bring detachment, fatigue, or spiritual withdrawal.
The Navamsha of the Transiting Planet§
An advanced technique: check the navamsha of the transiting planet's current position. When a transiting planet enters a navamsha that corresponds to a nakshatra whose lord is activating in the dasha, the double-resonance often coincides with specific events.
Transits and Dashas Together§
Transits operate within the container of the dasha. A favorable Jupiter transit during a Saturn mahadasha helps but does not override the Saturn period's overall themes. An unfavorable Saturn transit during a Jupiter mahadasha creates temporary friction but doesn't cancel the period's broader beneficence.
The combination of dasha + transit analysis is the Jyotishi's standard approach for timing specific events. When a dasha lord reaches a strong transit position and both indicators align with the natal chart's promises for that topic, the timing of delivery is most precise.
Moonketu's homepage shows the current sky — the transiting positions of all planets at the present moment — in real time. Reading those positions against a saved natal chart brings the gochara analysis to life. Transits are most meaningfully read alongside the active Vimshottari Dasha period — the dasha sets the theme; the transit provides the timing.
