Arudha Lagna — The Manifested Self
The birth lagna is the soul's point of entry — the body, the constitution, the inner orientation. The Arudha Lagna (AL) is something different: it is the reflection of that lagna in the mirror of the world. It shows the image that has formed in others' minds, the persona that Maya (illusion) has constructed around you, the reputation and perceived reality of your life.
Jaimini places the Arudha Lagna at the heart of his system precisely because worldly life operates through perception as much as through reality. The gap between the lagna and the Arudha Lagna is the gap between what you are and what others see — and that gap matters for prediction.
Calculating the Arudha Lagna§
- Find the lagna (ascendant sign) and its lord.
- Count from the lagna to the sign where the lagna lord sits — call this distance n signs (count inclusively: lagna itself = 1).
- Count the same distance n signs forward from the lagna lord's sign.
- The sign you land on is the Arudha Lagna.
Example: Lagna in Aries. Aries's lord is Mars. If Mars is in Cancer, the distance from Aries to Cancer is 4 signs (Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer). Count 4 signs from Cancer: Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra. The Arudha Lagna is Libra.
The Two Exceptions§
Two results require correction because the Arudha Lagna cannot occupy the same sign as the lagna or the 7th from the lagna:
If the calculation lands on the lagna sign itself: use the 10th sign from the lagna instead.
If the calculation lands on the 7th sign from the lagna: use the 4th sign from the lagna instead.
These exceptions reflect a technical principle: the Arudha, being the image in the world, cannot coincide with the source (the lagna) or its direct opposition (the 7th).
The Arudha Lagna in the Chart§
The Arudha Lagna is a sign — a full bhava in the rashi chart. Everything around it (planets in it, planets aspecting it via Rashi Drishti, its lord's condition) shapes the public image and worldly experience.
- Planets in the AL are prominently visible in the person's public life — they color the reputation and what others associate with the person.
- Benefics in the AL (or aspecting it) give a favorable public image; malefics can damage reputation or create public controversy.
- The AL lord's condition determines whether the projection is sustained and strong or unstable and wavering.
The 12 Arudha Padas§
Each house has its own Arudha Pada, calculated the same way: find the house, find its lord, count from the house to the lord, count the same distance from the lord, arrive at the Pada. The Arudhas are abbreviated A1 through A12:

The AL and Lagna — The Maya-Reality Gap§
The tension between the lagna and the Arudha Lagna is one of Jaimini's most powerful interpretive tools. When the lagna lord is strong and the AL is in a favorable sign well aspected by benefics, the inner person and the outer image are congruent — who you are is reasonably close to how you are seen.
But when the AL is in a difficult sign, occupied by malefics, or its lord is weak, the image the world holds of you may be inaccurate or unfavorable — even if your inner chart is strong. Conversely, a glamorous Arudha with a weaker lagna can describe someone whose reputation outpaces their actual development.
The 2nd and 8th signs from the AL deserve particular attention: the 2nd shows what sustains and expands the image; the 8th shows what threatens or destroys it.
The Arudha Lagna is where Jaimini makes contact with the external world. The soul may be running on the AK's desire; the public life runs on the Arudha. Any Jaimini delineation of career, relationships, and social standing runs through the Arudha padas. The A12 pada is the Upapada Lagna, used specifically for marriage.
