The Fourth House — Sukha Bhava

Sanskrit name Sukha Bhava — house of happiness / comfort
Classification Kendra · Moksha
Natural karakas Moon · Mercury
Natural sign · lord ♋ Cancer · Moon

Sukha means happiness and comfort. The 4th house is about what grounds us — the mother, the home environment, fixed property (land and buildings), education received in youth, vehicles, and the emotional foundations laid in childhood. It is the most private house in the chart: the IC, the nadir, the bottom of the sky at the time of birth. What happens in the 4th is felt inwardly before it is expressed outwardly.

Mother§

The mother is the 4th house's first signification. The karaka Moon, the sign Cancer's association with nourishment — all confirm this. The quality of the 4th house and its lord shows the relationship with the mother, her health, her presence or absence in the native's life, and the lasting emotional imprint she leaves.

Note: the 9th house also has associations with the mother in some traditions (particularly in Kerala Jyotish), and the father is split between the 9th and 10th. The most common assignment: mother = 4th, father = 9th.

Home and Property§

Fixed property — land, houses, real estate — is the 4th house's material domain. Planets here and the lord's placement affect whether the native acquires property, what the quality of home life is like, and whether domestic environments are stable or turbulent. The 4th lord in good dignity in a kendra or trikona supports property ownership and domestic happiness.

Education§

Formal education — especially the foundational education of childhood — belongs to the 4th. (Higher and specialized education belongs to the 9th.) Mercury, the natural karaka of intellect and learning, co-rules this house alongside the Moon.

Vehicles and Comforts§

The 4th governs vehicles and the general quality of domestic comfort — the things that make daily life smooth and pleasant. A well-placed 4th lord and benefic occupants tend to produce material comforts and good-quality vehicles. The D4 varga chart (Chaturthamsha) gives more detailed information specifically about property and fixed assets.

Emotional Foundations§

Beyond the external significations, the 4th house represents the emotional bedrock of the psyche — what the native instinctively returns to when under stress, what feels like "home" internally. A damaged 4th (afflicted lord, harsh planets in occupation) often corresponds to an insecure emotional foundation, difficulty settling, or a turbulent early home environment.

The 4th house is where outer life ends and inner life begins. A chart with a strong, well-supported 4th — benefic occupants or a well-placed lord in a kendra or trikona — tends to show a person with a stable emotional core, a good relationship with the mother, and a reliable home base. Everything else stands on this foundation. The natural sign of the 4th house is Cancer, and its natural karakas are the Moon and Mercury. See the houses overview for the kendra framework.
