The Three Karmas

The word karma simply means action — and its consequence. The Vedic framework distinguishes three layers that together explain why people are born into different circumstances, why the birth chart shows what it shows, and why astrology is a tool for navigation rather than a verdict.

The Three Layers§

Layer Sanskrit What it is In the chart
Accumulated Sanchita The total storehouse — every karma from every past life, ripened and unripened. Vast beyond any single lifetime's capacity to exhaust. Not directly visible. The entire reservoir from which prarabdha is drawn.
Activated Prarabdha The portion of sanchita set in motion for this lifetime. Already launched — like an arrow already in flight. Cannot be avoided, only lived through consciously or unconsciously. This is what the birth chart shows. The lagna, planetary positions, dashas — all are prarabdha ripening in sequence.
Being Created Kriyamana Karma generated right now through present choices and actions. Becomes future sanchita. The domain of free will. Not shown directly — but the chart reveals where free will operates most and where prarabdha is most fixed.

The Flow§

Past actions Sanchita (the reservoir) Prarabdha (this life's portion — the birth chart) lived experience + Kriyamana (new choices) future Sanchita

Why This Matters for Reading a Chart§

Prarabdha is not a fixed script of events — it is a set of conditions, tendencies, and timings. The dasha system shows when specific prarabdha ripens. The lagna shows the body and temperament given for this journey. Difficult placements indicate difficult prarabdha in that domain — karma arriving to be resolved, not arbitrary punishment.

Kriyamana is where the astrologer's counsel becomes useful. Knowing the terrain of prarabdha — where resistance is high, where doors are open — allows choices that work with the grain rather than against it.

Fixed, Variable, and Immediately Ripening§

The tradition further distinguishes karma by rigidity:

  • Dridha (fixed) — karma that will manifest regardless; certain outer conditions are set
  • Adridha (variable) — karma that can be modified through right action, remedy, or consciousness
  • Dridha-adridha — mixed; the event tends to happen but its impact is malleable

Severe planetary afflictions — strong debilitation, tight malefic conjunctions — tend toward dridha. Mild challenges can often be met through kriyamana.

The birth chart is a map of prarabdha — not a cage but a landscape. The planets show the terrain; the dashas show when each region becomes active; free will determines how we traverse it. See Rahu and Ketu for the karmic axis that connects past and future directly. Cast your chart to see your own prarabdha in sequence.
